Tones And I & Sully Erna Highlight Inaugural Alternative & Hard Rock Songwriter, Producer Charts

Billboard debuts four songwriter and producer charts (dated June 13), thanks to the premieres of the Hot Alternative Songs and Hot Hard Rock Songs charts.

Making their starts are Alternative Songwriters, Alternative Producers, Hard Rock Songwriters and Hard Rock Producers. The rankings are in line with Billboard’s 20 other songwriter and producer charts, which encompass all of Billboard’s “Hot”-named song charts that blend streaming, airplay and sales data.

(Plus, as the Hot Rock Songs chart is renamed Hot Rock & Alternative Songs, its corresponding songwriter and producer surveys follow suit, as they are now named Rock & Alternative Songwriters and Hot Rock & Alternative Producers.)

The Alternative Songwriters and Alternative Producers charts are based on total points accrued by songwriters and producers, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Alternative Songs chart; Likewise, the Hard Rock Songwriters and Hard Rock Producers charts are based on total points accrued by songwriters and producers, respectively, for each attributed song that appears on the Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. As with Billboard’s yearly recaps, multiple writers or producers split points for each song equally (and the dividing of points will lead to occasional ties on rankings).

Australian singer-songwriter Tones And I (real name: Toni Watson) rules the inaugural Alternative Songwriters chart, thanks to her tracks “Dance Monkey” and “Bad Child,” which rank at Nos. 4 and 18, respectively, on the first Hot Alternative Songs chart. Tones And I claims sole writing credit on both songs.

On the first Alternative Producers chart, Otterpop leads, as he’s the sole credited producer of Powfu’s “Death Bed,” featuring beabadoobie, which tops the initial Hot Alternative Songs chart.

Godsmack frontman Sully Erna heads up the first Hard Rock Songwriters chart, thanks to the group’s “Unforgettable,” which places at No. 3 on the maiden Hot Hard Rock Songs chart. Erna solely wrote the song and produced it with Erik Ron (as the pair ties at No. 8 on Hard Rock Producers).

Tyler Smyth tops the first Hard Rock Producers chart, thanks to three production credits on the Hot Hard Rock Songs ranking. Falling in Reverse’s “Popular Monster,” which Smyth solely produced and wrote with Ronnie Radke and Cody Quistad, ranks at No. 1, followed by I Prevail and Joyner Lucas’ “DOA” (co-produced with David Pramik) at No. 5 and Falling in Reverse’s “The Drug in Me Is Reimagined” at No. 22.
