No, Jessica Simpson Hasn’t Watched the Britney Spears Doc: ‘It’s One of Those Triggers’

Jessica Simpson talked to Tamron Hall about her new memoir Open Book and opened up about why she hasn’t watched the Framing Britney Spears documentary.

The buzzy documentary shines a spotlight on the misogynistic media that scrutinized the 39-year-old pop superstar for years — the same pressure Kim Kardashian said she felt and was reminded of when she watched it earlier this month. But Simpson doesn’t want to relive those dark times in her own life.

“It’s one of those things that if I were to watch it, reliving that for me, it’s one of those triggers. It definitely gives me anxiety, and I lived it,” Simpson told the talk show host when asked if she had screened it. “And I know Britney and I know what she went through and it’s so hard because it’s so many people’s opinions on you just trying to live your life as a normal human being, because inside we’re really just, we are normal, you know? We might have a big platform, but you can only take stuff for so long, you can only allow people in and attacking you until you have to really put your guard up.”

Simpson, 40, reiterated her statement about choosing to not watch the Spears doc to People on Thursday (March 25), adding that she admires Britney’s “ambition, strength and the capability to live unapologetically and authentically” and feels “happy that people are supporting Britney.” In February 2020, Simpson told Entertainment Tonight that she admired Spears and Christina Aguilera because “they don’t let the world control them,” despite the industry’s efforts to pit the three against each other.

Similar to Kardashian’s Framing reflection of how the media attacked her for her weight while she was pregnant with her first daughter North, the Dukes of Hazzard actress revisited the scrutiny she faced for her weight in a journal entry that’s included in the new paperback edition of her 2020 book, which is out this week.

“There is a wonderful movement for body positivity now and the response to that portion of my story has been overwhelmingly supportive,” she told People. “I don’t think people always realized that there was a human being, a beating heart and working eyes with actual feelings behind those headlines and that words can hurt and stay with you for a lifetime.”
