Michael Stipe made a return to late-night TV on Tuesday when he logged into The Tonight Show for a virtual performance of “No Time For Love,” only this time he had support.
The R.E.M. frontman teamed with Big Red Machine’s Aaron Dessner for a haunting rendition of the new song.
Stipe appears briefly with a surgical mask and is drenched in a blue light throughout the performance, while a split screen shows Dessner (of The National) at the piano. It’s a near-perfect replica of the official video for “No Time For Love,” which dropped earlier this month.
The song is the title track from Stipe’s collaborative album with Big Red Machine.
“‘No Time for Love Like Now’ was written last fall, but when the reality of the COVID-19 pandemic, social distancing and self-isolation descended, the words felt like they were written about this time,” R.E.M. shared in an Instagram post about the inspiration behind the tune.
Stipe delivered a virtual performance of the song on The Late Show back in April.
