Harry Styles’ ‘Adore You’ Hits No. 1 on Adult Contemporary Chart

Harry Styles’ “Adore You” ascends to No. 1 on Billboard’s Adult Contemporary radio airplay chart (dated Aug. 22), marking his first leader on the list.

Styles previously climbed as high as No. 2 on the AC chart as a member of One Direction, with the group’s “Story of My Life” in 2014.

Concurrently, Styles leads the Pop Songs airplay chart for a third week with “Watermelon Sugar,” the follow-up single to “Adore You” from Styles’ 2019 album Fine Line.

Five other artists have topped the tallies with different songs simultaneously, as hit singles tend to peak later at the more conservative AC format after first breaking through at mainstream top 40; “Adore You” ruled Pop Songs in April.

Styles scores the first such double domination since Taylor Swift paced Pop Songs with “Bad Blood,” featuring Kendrick Lamar, and AC with prior single “Style” in July 2015. (The latter is widely believed to be about Styles. “I think about what it means to me to write a song about somebody else, and, for someone else to do that, I think it’s flattering,” he mused to Howard Stern on SiriusXM in March. “Even if the song isn’t that flattering, you still spend time on it and, ultimately, using Taylor as an example, she’s a great songwriter.”)

Before that, Swift also achieved the feat, topping Pop Songs with “Blank Space” and AC with previous single “Shake It Off” in January 2015. Since Pop Songs began in 1992 (joining AC, which dates to 1961), Katy Perry, Bruno Mars, Kelly Clarkson and Boyz II Men have also led the charts simultaneously with different songs.
