Cyndi Lauper Looks Back on the Stonewall Riots With Trinity the Tuck: Exclusive

It has been over fifty years since the Stonewall Riots of 1969 officially started what is now known as Pride Month, and now Cyndi Lauper is taking a moment to look back on the flagship moment in LGBTQ history.

In an exclusive new clip from We Stan, the new short-form interview series from World of Wonder in partnership with Legacy Recordings, Lauper joins RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars 3 winner Trinity the Tuck to look back on the the fateful uprising that occurred at the Stonewall Inn 51 years ago.

“I just want people to understand about Stonewall … the police always came in, harassed, beat, arrested (the patrons),” Lauper says in the clip. “The first people who fought back were the drag queens. The drag performers and drag queens deserve some respect.”

Lauper also chatted with Trinity — who appears in a handmade replica of the singer’s iconic 1986 dress she wore during her headlining slot at Madison Square Garden — about the meaning of Pride in the context of the rebellion that started it all.

“Pride is about … you gotta feel good about yourself, you gotta celebrate,” she says. “What’s not right is to make someone feel horrible about themselves because they’re different, whether it’s the color of your skin, or where you’re from, or how you dress, or who you love! Hey, it’s love! It’s not hate! It’s love! So celebrate yourself, love yourself, and love the people around you.”

The new clip is part of World of Wonder’s brand new interview series, that will see queens from Drag Race pair up with some of their celebrity heroes to discuss their experience with and support of the LGBTQ community.
