Now with 18 total top 10s on the tally, Weezer boasts at least one in every decade dating to the 1990s, when it first reached the region with its debut hit “Undone – The Sweater Song,” which rose to No. 6 in August 1994. The band has three top 10s in the ’90s, eight in the 2000s, six in the ’10s and now its first of the ’20s.
Only one other act has scored Alternative Airplay top 10s in the ’90s, ’00s, ’10s and ’20s in this still-young decade: Green Day, whose “Oh Yeah!” notched a week at No. 1 in April.
Weezer becomes one of just four acts with Alternative Airplay top 10s in four different decades, dating to the chart’s September 1988 inception. In addition to Green Day in the four most recent decades, Jane’s Addiction and Red Hot Chili Peppers each snagged top 10s in the ’80s, ’90s, ’00s and ’10s.
Weezer moves into sole possession of the sixth-most total Alternative Airplay top 10s. Red Hot Chili Peppers lead with 25 top 10s, followed by Foo Fighters and Green Day (24 each), U2 (23) and Pearl Jam (19). After Weezer, three acts have scored 17 top 10s each: Linkin Park, The Offspring and The Smashing Pumpkins.
“Hero” is the second single from Weezer’s upcoming album Van Weezer. “The End of the Game” hit No. 2 in November.
Concurrently, “Hero” jumps 16-11 on the all-rock-format, audience-based Rock Airplay chart, up 16% to 2.9 million audience impressions, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data. It also pushes 28-26 on the Mainstream Rock Songs airplay list and 38-35 on the multi-metric Hot Rock & Alternative Songs chart.
