Universal Inks Distribution Deal With Famed Italian Label Sugar Music

Universal Music Group has forged a global distribution partnership with famed Italian music label Sugar Music Group, home to some of the most iconic soundtracks in movie history, including La Dolce Vita and Il Postino.

Under the partnership agreement, UMG will distribute all of Sugar’s catalogs from the label’s 88-year history. Future recordings from Sugar’s roster of artists, which includes Andrea Bocelli, will be distributed domestically via UMG Italy, with support from UMG’s global network of labels, to reach new audiences around the world, UMG says in a press release.

Founded in Milan in 1932 by Hungarian-born Ladislao Sugar, who came from a family of musicians, Sugar is a family-owned business that has been at the forefront of Italian music culture for decades. The label built the prestigious CAM Sugar catalog of over 2,000 soundtracks from Italian and French cinema, which features the works of over 400 music maestros, including Ennio Morricone (Cinema Paradiso; The Good, The Bad and the Ugly), Nino Rota and Philippe Sarde.

As part of the far-reaching agreement, UMG label Decca Records and Sugar will work closely together to explore the largely untapped collection of music from the world of Italian and European cinema for future release, re-introducing the cinematic masterpieces to a new generation of music and film lovers around the world.

“Having one, truly unique, worldwide distribution solution for the entire breadth of Sugar recordings is a very important step, as we look to grow our reach and visibility into new territories,” Sugar Music Group president and CEO Filippo Sugar, the family’s third-generation music executive, said in a statement.

“We are thrilled to expand our long-standing relationship with Filippo and Sugar Music, and to provide support for their artists and rich catalogues worldwide,” added Lucian Grainge, chairman and CEO of Universal Music Group.
