This Unseen Green Day ‘Insomniac’ Tour Doc Will Make You Feel Young Again… Or Super Old

After seven months of no concerts or large gatherings, watching a 25-year-old documentary about a time when 5,000 sweaty kids packed into an arena like sardines to see Green Day blow the roof off the dump seems like 250 years ago. That’s the nostalgic feeling you’ll get watching a just-unearthed, previously unreleased European tour doc celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Bay Area trio’s fourth studio album, Insomniac.

The collection, which turned 25 on Oct. 10, will also be celebrated with a double-LP reissue on translucent orange vinyl with bonus live tracks from a 1996 Prague show; due to COVID-19 production delays, the vinyl, available here, won’t ship until early 2021. The band is also offering some classic Insomniac merch as well as a limited-edition (500) Insomniac archival giclee print from Winston Smith, who designed the album cover, with all proceeds benefitting the Alameda County Community Food Bank; the sale begins on Oct. 12 at 3 p.m. ET here.

With Billy Joe Armstrong, Tre Cool and Mike Dirnt looking like college kids out on a bender, the 21-minute doc has them ripping through “Warning,” “Brat,” “Walking Contradiction” and “Geek Stink Breath,” among others, voting to drink champagne and gorge on caviar when a show goes South over a loss of power and generally goofing around backstage and on the tour bus.

“We wanted to do something special, so here is the biggest glimpse ever into the Insomniac era tours from 1995-96,” the band said in a statement. “Never before seen footage from Europe 95 tour and Live concert in Prague shot on 16mm film in Europe 1996 with the fateful last shows on tour before returning home to go back into the studio for Nimrod album sessions.”
