The Protesting ‘Portland Moms’ Have a New Anthem Thanks to This Beloved Children’s Singer

Iconic children’s singer Raffi has stepped up to pay tribute to some of the moms out there protesting in support of racial justice and Black Lives Matter. The “Bananaphone” star released “Portland Moms” over the weekend, tweeting, “in solidarity with #BlackLivesMattter, a tribute to the heroic protests vs injustice in Portland and elsewhere: an idea that woke me up 3 am, now recorded. thanks to @LinzMunroe (vocals) and Ivan Rosenberg (dobro). #PortlandMoms #ResistFascism #FloydGeorge #PortlandProtests.”

The jaunty, folky tune with a Woody Guthrie flair shouts out the mothers who’ve been flooding Portland’s streets in their signature yellow shirts, walking arm-in-arm to protect other protesters from the unmarked federal troops Pres. Trump has sent into the area to quell nearly two months of streets protests against police brutality and racial inequality.

“Portland Moms won’t you come out tonight, come out tonight, come out tonight / Portland Moms won’t you come out tonight, by the light of the silvery moon,” Raffi sings with backing from Lindsay Munroe and Ivan Rosenberg, repeating the refrain on behalf of Black Lives Matter, Wall of Vets, and Strong and Peaceful.
