Simon Cowell’s Syco Expects No Material Impact From Coronavirus

Simon Cowell’s production company Syco Entertainment expects no material hit from the novel coronavirus pandemic.

The company, whose TV hit franchises include The X Factor and Got Talent, said in a U.K. regulatory filing that it “does not believe COVID-19 has materially impacted the future developments of this company.”

Like others in the sector, the firm has dealt with production delays though, including for the finals of Britain’s Got Talent on U.K. TV network ITV.

The firm also disclosed a lower profit for the 18-months period ended in September 2019. In its financial update, Syco reported a profit of  693,017 pounds ($883,000) for the period, compared with a profit of 38.9 million pounds ($49.5 million) in the previous period.

Last year, Syco and Fremantle-owned banner Thames struck a new five-year deal with ITV covering further seasons of X Factor and Britain’s Got Talent. In April, Syco teamed with the Shanghai Media Group on a new Chinese talent show, The Magnificent Dancer, based on Syco’s competition series The Greatest Dancer, which launched in the U.K. in 2019 on BBC One.

Cowell in August broke his back while test-riding his electric bicycle in Malibu. He tweeted about the accident, writing that he had “broken part of [his] back” and issuing a “massive thank you to the nurses and doctors” who treated him. Cowell concluded: “Some good advice…If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.”
