Peter Jackson’s Beatles Movie to Be Accompanied by ‘Get Back’ Coffee Table Book

The Beatles announced on Wednesday (Sept. 16) that they will release an expansive coffee table book, The Beatles: Get Back, to accompany director Peter Jackson’s 2021 feature documentary, Beatles: Get Back. The 240-page hardcover book with “hundreds of previously unpublished images” from the 1969 studio sessions for the Let It Be album is due out on Aug. 31, 2021, just days after the rescheduled release of the film, which was postponed until August 27, 2021, due to the coronavirus.

“This definitive volume will present an exclusive, in-their-own-words account of The Beatles’ Let It Be recording sessions, illustrated with hundreds of previously unpublished images, including photos by Ethan A. Russell and Linda McCartney,” reads a release announcing the book. Get Back is the first official standalone book from the rock icons since the best-selling 2002 The Beatles Anthology.

The book will feature transcribed conversations between John, Paul, George and Ringo culled from more than 120 recorded hours of the studio sessions over three weeks, as well as a foreword by director Jackson and an introduction by British playwright Hanif Kureishi. “This intimate, riveting book invites us to travel back in time to January 1969, the beginning of The Beatles’ last year as a band,” reads the statement.

Over 21 days, first at Twickenham Film Studios and then at their own brand-new Apple Studios, with cameras and tape recorders documenting every day’s work, the band rehearse a huge number of songs, new and old, in preparation for what proves to be their final concert, which famously takes place on the rooftop of their own Apple Corps office building, bringing central London to a halt.” Click here to read more about the $60 book.

Jackson’s anticipated film will look back at the sessions for the album using more than 55 hours of unreleased original 16-mm footage filmed by Michael Lindsay-Hogg in 1969.
