MGM Resorts and Insurers to Pay $800M to Route 91 Shooting Victims, Families

Casino company MGM Resorts International and its insurers will pay $800 million in payouts to more than 4,400 victims and their relatives of the deadliest mass shooting committed by an individual in U.S. history, according to a settlement approved by a Nevada court on Wednesday (Sept. 30).

The settlement arrived just before the third anniversary of the tragedy. On Oct. 1, 2017, a gunman on the 32nd floor of the MGM-owned Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas opened fire on a crowd attending the nearby outdoor Route 91 Harvest country music festival, killing 58 people and injuring more than 850.

MGM Resorts, which also owns the concert venue where the festival was held, acknowledged no liability in the settlement. It will pay $49 million, while its insurance companies will pay the remaining $751 million.

The ruling by Clark County District Court Judge Linda Bell finalizes a deal announced early in September that settles dozens of lawsuits filed against MGM Resorts, in which victims and families accused the casino giant of failing to protect the festival’s estimated more than 22,000 attendees.

The plaintiffs’ lawyer, attorney Robert Eglet, told Associated Press that the amounts to be disbursed to each claimant will be determined by two retired judges, and he is hopeful that the payments will begin going out by the end of the year. “There’ve been no objections and we expect no appeals,” he said.

The gunman, 64-year-old Stephen Paddock, killed himself before police closed in. Police have never determined a clear motive for the attack.
