Lenny Kravitz Asks ‘What Side of History Are You Standing On?’ During Tiny Desk Concert: Watch

Lenny Kravitz took NPR to the Bahamas for his new Tiny Desk (Home) Concert on Monday (July 20).

Performing from his tropical abode on the island of Eleuthera, the rocker kicked things off with “Thinking of You,” the second single from his 1998 album 5, which was dedicated to the memory of his mother Roxie Roker after she passed away from cancer a few years prior.

Next, Kravitz transitioned to Baptism album cut “What Did I Do With My Life?” to ask some important questions against a pristine backdrop of palm trees and other lush greenery as he moved the performance outdoors. “In the midst of all that has transpiring on our planet right now, it is a blessed time for introspection. More importantly, action. What side of history are you standing on?” he asked while introducing the thoughtful, soul-searching 2004 track.

“You can live any way you want to/ All you have to do is dance/ Achieve anything you thought of/ You just have to take the chance/ You can fall in love with your life/ ‘Cause that truly is romance/ What did I do with my life?” he crooned on the song’s preaching, feel-good chorus.

Finally, the singer-songwriter closed out his set with “We Can Get It All Together,” the opening track of his most recent studio set — 2018’s Raise Vibration.

“Wrapped up in sorrow/ Illusions I can’t by words explain/ Caught up in nothing/ Confusions has turned my world insane/ Deliver me from loneliness/ Deliver me from selfishness/ Deliver me from brokenness/ Deliver me so we can get it all together,” he sang on the first verse and chorus over churning guitar from longtime collaborator Craig Ross and mentee Yianni Giannakopoulous and the crash of an 808 drum machine.
