Kierra Sheard ‘Keeps’ Coming Back to No. 1 on Gospel Airplay Chart: ‘God Continues to Answer My Prayers’

Kierra Sheard scores her third No. 1 on Billboard’s Gospel Airplay chart, and her first a lead role, as “It Keeps Happening” ascends 3-1 on the ranking dated Sept. 26. In the tracking week ending Sept. 20, the song increased by 15 percent in plays, according to Nielsen Music/MRC Data.

Sheard co-wrote “Happening” with her brother, producer and songwriter J. Drew Sheard, II. It’s the second single from her album Kierra, which debuted at No. 1 on the Top Gospel Albums survey dated May 2 with 6,000 equivalent album units, becoming her fifth leader. Launch single “Don’t Judge Me” reached No. 23 on Gospel Airplay in December.

“God continues to answer my prayers as heard in ‘It Keeps Happening,’ ” Sheard tells Billboard. “I am so proud of the body of work this song is included on [Kierra] and it’s even more humbling to know the world is being blessed by it. When I wrote this song, I had no doubt it would live in the hearts of believers and last a lifetime.”

Sheard previously topped Gospel Airplay as featured on GEI’s “Hang On,” for a week in April 2017, and Mary Mary’s “God in Me,” which ruled for seven weeks beginning in August 2009.

Also an accomplished actress, Sheard is the daughter of Karen Clark Sheard of legendary gospel quartet The Clark Sisters. She portrayed her mother in the biopic The Clark Sisters: The First Ladies of Gospel, which premiered on Lifetime in April.

Also on Gospel airplay, Marvin Sapp rolls up his 12th top 10, as “Thank You for It All” lifts 11-9 (up 6 percent). Sapp’s sum, which includes four No. 1s, started with his second entry, “Do You Know Him?” which climbed to No. 6 in 2006. His dozen top 10s tie him with Kirk Franklin for the second-most in the history of the chart, which began in March 2005. James Fortune & FIYA lead with 13.

On the Christian Airplay chart, sibling trio Cain achieves its first top 10 as its debut single “Rise Up (Lazarus)” pushes 12-10 (6.2 million in audience, up 11 percent). Cain comprises Logan Cain, Madison Cain Johnson and Taylor Cain Matz, all based in Nashville.
