Kelly Clarkson Is Just a Girl Who Wants to Have Fun Singing This Cyndi Lauper Classic

With the weekend officially starting, Kelly Clarkson wants to help you get into the spirit with her latest Kellyoke cover.

On Friday’s (Jan. 22) episode of The Kelly Clarkson Show, the host took the stage to perform her own rendition of the classic Cyndi Lauper 1984 hit single “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.” Joined by an ’80s-inspired backing band, Clarkson got the opportunity to show off her belt, taking on every note of the song with her vibrant chest voice.

“Some boys take a beautiful girl/ And hide her away from the rest of the world,” she sang. “I wanna be the one to walk in the sun/ Oh, girls, they wanna have fun.”

Lauper’s original rendition of “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun,” which itself was a reworking of Robert Hazard’s original song, became her breakthrough hit back in 1984, climbing all the way up to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100.

Clarkson’s cover of the pop classic capped a week of noteworthy performances, where the star sang Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head” and Tracy Chapman’s 1995 hit “Give Me One Reason,” which she revamped with a bluesy new melody.
