John Legend on Watching George Floyd Killing: ‘We Do See Our Family Members When That Happens’

John Legend pictured himself and his younger brother’s son when he watched the video of George Floyd being suffocated to death by a Minneapolis police officer.

In an interview with Willie Geist slated to run on Sunday’s (June 21) episode of the TODAY show, father of two Legend says watching Floyd slowly die as the officer kept his knee on the unarmed black man’s neck for nearly nine minutes was a harsh reminder that someone he knows could have been under that knee.

“We do see our family members when that happens,” Legend tells Geist. “My younger brother has a son, who’s 19 or 20 years old, and I could see him in moments like that having a misunderstanding with officers. And I worry for him. I worry for, particularly once they hit a certain age and their body is deemed as threatening to other people, they could experience that same thing.”

The singer, who frequently uses his platform to make pleas for social justice and equality, also says that while his new album, Bigger Love — due out on Friday (June 19) — was recorded before the global protests in the wake of Floyd’s killing, he’s hopeful that his message of love might bring some solace during these uncertain times.

“I think we’ve seen so many images of Black people in mourning and outrage. I feel like this album is kind of an antidote to that,” he says. “Though this album wasn’t written in response to what happened just now, I think we could all use a lift right now and some love right now and some joy.”
