Jennifer Hudson Channels Aretha Franklin at the 2020 BET Awards

At the 20th BET Awards on Sunday night (June 28), Jennifer Hudson delivered a stellar performance of the Queen of Soul’s “Young, Gifted and Black.”

Hudson — who is starring as the icon in the upcoming film, Respect, out later this year — injected new meaning into the classic track, which she performed with vocal support of a gospel choir. Following the set, a trailer for the film played in which Hudson sings “Respect” in a gold gown.

Hudson has kept busy in quarantine, most recently appearing on Global Goal and in May collaborating (virtually) with John Legend for the second Disney Family Singalong livestream.

Watch her performance of “Young, Gifted and Black” below.
