If you had any other weekend plans lined up, Salt-N-Pepa need you to push it to watch their Lifetime biopic on Saturday (Jan. 23).
The three-hour movie tells the inspiring story of Queensborough Community College students Cheryl “Salt” James (G.G. Townson) and her partner in rhyme Sandra “Pepa” Denton (Laila Odom) and their rise to fame as a genre-smashing rap group after recording a song for their pal Hurby “Luv Bug” Azor (Cleveland Berto). Monique Paul is behind the boards as third member DJ Spinderella. The Lifetime biopic will feature their greatest hits, including “Let’s Talk About Sex,” “Whatta Man,” “Shoop” and “Push It.”
Salt-N-Pepa also celebrates the trio’s superfly outfits and super accomplishments, including being the first platinum-selling female hip-hop act and first Grammy-winning female rap group when they won for best rap performance by a duo or group in 1995 for “None of Your Business.” Salt-N-Pepa are set to receive the 2021 lifetime achievement award from the Recording Academy and will be recognized on the 63rd annual Grammy Awards on Jan. 31.
“I’m going to be so honest: It was a difficult process for me because I was not in a good headspace,” James told Billboard’s Jordyn Rolling about working on the project, which Salt-N-Pepa executive produced and Mario Van Peebles directed. “It was not a great time. It was also nerve-racking. It was emotional, you know, going over your life story — 30-something years — trying to fit it in a two- to three-hour movie.”
Salt-N-Pepa officially premieres on Saturday, Jan. 23 at 8 p.m. ET on Lifetime.
