How Taylor Swift Shot the ‘Cardigan’ Video During a Pandemic

It’s one thing to record a surprise album in quarantine, but filming a full-on music video? That takes some doing. But leave it to Taylor Swift to pull off a responsible, socially distanced shoot for the song “Cardigan” from her eighth album, Folklore, which she announced out of the blue on Thursday morning (July 23).

After revealing the album title, cover, impressive list of indie-rock collaborators and the 16-song track list for the album dropping July 24, Swift kept the data dump coming with a short tale of how she managed to pull off the shoot for “Cardigan,” which she directed and wrote the treatment for.

“A million thank you’s to my brilliant, bad ass video team – cinematographer Rodrigo Prieto, producer Jil Hardin, executive producer Rebecca Skinner, AD Joe ‘Oz’ Osbourne, editor Chancler Haynes, special effects wizards David Lebensfeld & Grant Miller, and set designer Ethan Tobman,” wrote Swift about the video, which will premiere on Thursday night; Prieto is a cinematographer known for his work with directors Martin Scosese (The Irishman, The Wolf of Wall Street) and and Alejandro González Iñárritu (Biutiful, Babel).

Given the strict mask and distancing requirements in place across the nation to slow down the spread of the COVID-19 virus, Swift added that the entire shoot was overseen by a medical inspector with everyone on set wearing a mask and staying an appropriate distance away from each other. And the best part? “I even did my own hair, makeup, and styling,” wrote Swift, who had to laugh at adding a few more hyphens to her long list of gigs.
