Following Lady Gaga’s soaring rendition of the National Anthem and Jennifer Lopez’s heartfelt performance of “This Land Is Your Land” and “America the Beautiful” at President Joe Biden’s inauguration on Wednesday (Jan. 20) in Washington, D.C., Garth Brooks joined in the celebration of democracy to sing “Amazing Grace.”
Doffing his cowboy hat on the steps of the Capitol, Brooks crooned the religious standard with strength yet restraint. He asked everyone in attendance — and watching at home — to join him in singing a round of the hymn “as one, united” before shaking the hands of President Biden, former Vice President Mike Pence and current Vice President Kamala Harris.
Earlier this week, the country icon was announced as a performer at the 46th President of the United States’ swearing in ceremony, following an invitation from First Lady Dr. Jill Biden. “This is a great day in our household, this is not a political statement, this is a statement of unity,” Brooks said. “This is history, and it is an honor to get to serve.”
Brooks turned down the opportunity to play Donald Trump’s inauguration in 2017, citing a busy touring schedule. With the pandemic sidelining tours in 2021, that clearly wasn’t an issue. Brooks performed at Barack Obama’s inauguration in 2009.
