The bright video finds the bandmates trapped in a suburban nightmare where everyone around them can’t take their eyes off their phone screens. “Nervously send/ An emoji again/ No reply phone call/ You never change, tough girl, no/ You keep looking at the phone when you’re with me/ You acting like you are busy, replying late/ Why you keep acting like that, acting like that?/ Why you keep acting, keep acting?” Sehun and Chanyeol sing on the track’s chorus over a series of bleeps, bloops and a jaunty piano riff.
The clip takes a turn, however, when the duo are magically transported halfway through the second chorus to the bunker that serves as home to the neighborhood’s phone service. As an unseen 10cm croons on the falsetto-tinged bridge, the K-pop stars manage to destroy the servers, stylishly walking away from the exploding machines in slow motion as the video draws to a close.
“Telephone” is the lead single for the Exo sub-group’s upcoming debut album, 1 Billion Views, which is scheduled to drop July 13 via SM Studios. The LP will also feature the Moon-assisted title track, “Fly Away” featuring Dynamic Duo’s Gaeko and solo tracks from both Chanyeol (“Nothin’”) and Sehun (“On Me”).
