Everything’s Terrible But at Least There’s This Surprise Compilation Album From Hudson Mohawke

It’s been said, ad nauseam, that 2020 hasn’t been the easiest time for anyone, and certainly the dance scene has taken a hard hit with the closure of clubs, the cancellation of festivals and the impossibility of dancing with anyone other than our quarantine buddies, our pets and ourselves in the mirror.

But today (Aug. 4), veteran Scottish producer Hudson Mohawke is lifting spirits and heart rates with an excellent surprise compilation LP, B.B.H.E.

Short for Big Booty Hiking Expedition, the album is made up of tracks that have been in the Mohawke vault since as far back as the mid-2000s.

“Back at start of lockdown,” Mohawke said of the album on Twitter, “I decided I was gona [sic] release some music of mine that I’d just rediscovered, after thinking it was lost, n some that had appeared in radio rips / reddit / youtube etc that I continually get asked for but has never been available officially.”

“There’s enough distance between this music now,” he continued in a press release. “At some point you have to set it free.”

The 14-song, 29 minute compilation is a substantive, victorious joyride of experimental beats, wild yelps, chunky synths and the complex percussion which altogether made the producer a star of the global scene at the turn of the decade, both as a solo artist and through his massive, seminal work with Lunice as TNGHT.

B.B.H.E. is out now via Warp. Listen to the album below.
