Duran Duran Puts on a Futuristic Light Show For ‘Five Years’ David Bowie Tribute Video

Duran Duran captures the magic of David Bowie’s “Five Years” with a state-of-the-art music video for their cover released Thursday (Jan. 28).

Bowie’s longtime pianist Mike Garson accompanies the English new wave band in the futuristic visual with colorful light streaks swirling around each member. Director Gavin Elder shot the band members individually in London and L.A., while experimental artist Teek Mach (virtually) brought them together in one space.

“Five Years” is the opening track from Bowie’s classic 1972 album The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders From Mars, which inspired the men of Duran Duran to chase the rock ‘n’ roll dream. They covered the song for the A Bowie Celebration: Just for One Day livestream concert on Jan. 8, which would’ve been Bowie’s 74th birthday.

“David Bowie’s apocalyptic vision in the song ‘Five Years’ was written almost half a century ago, yet it seems ever more poignant today,” Duran Duran’s keyboardist Nick Rhodes said in a statement. “Although it is five years since David left Planet Earth, his vast catalogue of songs remain as significant and inspirational as they always have been. Mike Garson’s heartfelt celebration show was a testament to the breadth of influence that David had on other musicians. It was also a display of the deep affection and gratitude for what he gave to us all.”

Duran Duran is commemorating another special date — their own 40th anniversary as a group — by starting a new Pandora program called Duran 40, which is dedicated to their greatest hits and fan-favorite tracks. The band also kicked off a new WHOOOSH! SiriusXM program, where lead singer Simon Le Bon and his co-host, the band’s director of digital media Katy Krassner, chat about and play some of their favorite records.
