Demi Lovato Tells Kelly Clarkson She Was Her First Idol Growing Up

Demi Lovato dropped by The Kelly Clarkson Show on Wednesday (June 23) and it’s safe to say the chat was a mutual love fest with host Kelly Clarkson.

First the American Idol winner brought up Lovato’s outspoken nature regarding mental health, saying, “I love how open you are about mental health because I have similar issues and I suffer from depression…I just love that you’re open about that because not everybody’s as vulnerable at being like that, and I think it’s helpful for your fans…and knowing that somebody else is going through it makes you not feel alone and so depressed about it. So thank you for doing that, it’s really hard.”

However, Lovato was quick to return the compliment, telling Clarkson she was the first “idol” she had as a child. “I wouldn’t be the artist, or even the person, that I am with being so outspoken and vulnerable and fearless if I hadn’t had you to look up to,” Lovato told her fellow pop star. “So I thank you for that because…I looked at you as my idol growing up. You are fearless and courageous and real as…you know? And I love that about you. When I was younger, I always just thought to myself, ‘If I ever make it, I want to be like her because she’s real and she’s genuine.’”

Ever the humble multi-hyphenate, Clarkson accepted Lovato’s effusive praise with her trademark grace, admitting that she’s far from the way the younger singer described every day.

“I’m not all the time! It takes work,” the host said. “I think that’s the thing, everybody looks at us as like, even when you overcome something they’re like, ‘OK she’s already overcome that.’ And I’m like, ‘No, no, no. That’s a daily effort in, like, trying to be positive. That’s a daily effort. That’s not like a given, like you’re just over it and you went to some magical therapy session and it’s over. I think that that’s a daily thing that you work at and a daily thing that I work at. I don’t know; thank you for the compliments but I just think it’s a really cool thing and it’s not easy to always have a spotlight on you and arrows being aimed at you. Especially when you are vulnerable and you give people more ammo for all the trolls out there.”

During the chat, Lovato also opened up about supporting Black Lives Matter and how she’s using her platform to be an effective ally to the movement.
