Colin Jost Blames Fiancée Scarlett Johansson for ‘Perfectly Framed’ Guitar in ‘SNL’ Weekend Update

Saturday Night Live viewers thought Colin Jost took up guitar lessons during quarantine when the instrument unintentionally guest-starred on the first at-home Weekend Update. But in an interview with The New York Times published today (July 8), he blamed his fiancée Scarlett Johansson for the fluke.

“Scarlett had that guitar forever and it was in the quarantine,” Jost said during the interview. “She was like, ‘Maybe I should learn to how to play,’ and just left it on the couch. It was so perfectly framed there and then everyone pointed it out and I was like, how can I be so dumb? I had no awareness of it at all.”

The longtime SNL head writer paid homage to the accidental star of the show in an Instagram post from April 25. “My favorite observation from last episode, even among my fellow cast members, was: ‘Great job including the guitar, douchebag,’” he wrote at the time. “I have never, nor do I pretend to play, the guitar. Nor do I physically understand how it works.”
