Cher, The Chicks & More to Support LGBTQ Youth for GLAAD Spirit Day 2020

Between a global pandemic, social unrest and a contentious presidential election, 2020 has been a rough year for everyone. So for their annual celebration of LGBTQ people everywhere, GLAAD is pulling out all of the stops.

On Thursday (Oct. 8), GLAAD announced Spirit Day, the organization’s annual anti-bullying campaign, will take place on Oct. 15. The yearly campaign sees companies, celebrities and more “going purple” on social media to show their support for LGBTQ youth in a unified stand against bullying.

For 202o, GLAAD announced a stacked lineup of artists set to participate in the annual event, including Cher, The Chicks, Halle Berry, Tegan & Sara, Ava Max, Peppermint, Elizabeth Berkley, Sterling K. Brown, Kat Cunning, Daughtry, Carlie Hanson, Megan Hilty, JoJo, Maggie Lindemann, MAX, Soko and many more.

In addition to their usual initiatives, GLAAD also released a new children’s book for this year’s event, Spirit Day: A Book About Spreading Joy. With illustrations by Joy Yang, the book aims to teach children about Spirit Day, bullying and LGBTQ pride.

“From the effects of COVID-19, to the social uprising against racial injustice and police brutality, to the Trump administration’s consistent attacks on LGBTQ people, this year has presented unprecedented challenges and crises, all of which continue to uniquely and disproportionately impact LGBTQ youth,” GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement. “At a time when LGBTQ youth may be isolating in homes that are not affirming or do not have access to their usual support systems, this year’s Spirit Day is a chance for LGBTQ people and allies to send messages of acceptance and support to LGBTQ youth when they need it most.”
