Chance the Rapper Supports Kanye West’s Presidential Bid, Dismisses Joe Biden

Chance the Rapper and Kanye West have been friends for years, so it’s not surprising that the fellow Chicago rapper born Chancelor Bennett appears to be backing Ye’s purported White House bid.

In a series of tweets on Monday (July 13), Chance sounded like he was throwing his support behind the quixotic third-party presidential run that West announced over the 4th of July weekend, while simultaneously throwing shade at one of West’s potential presidential rivals, presumptive Democratic candidate Joe Biden.

“And yall out there tryna convince me to vote for Biden. Smfh,” Chance tweeted along with a link to the new West tribute to his late mother, “DONDA.” Subsequent tweets had Chance questioning whether “we” are in favor of a two-party system and making a blanket accusation of racism against an unknown group before fully explaining his pro-Ye, anti-Biden stance.

“Are u more pro biden or anti ye and why? I get that you’ll want to reply that you’re just tryna ‘get trump out’ but in this hypothetical scenario where you’re replacing Trump, can someone explain why Joe Biden would be better??” Chance asked before answering his own question after getting more than 7,700 retweets and comments, many of which questioned the seriousness of West’s alleged run.

At press time, it still did not appear that West had filed the necessary paperwork with the Federal Election Commission to mount a serious run. A spokesperson for the “Wash Us in the Blood” rapper hadn’t returned multiple requests from Billboard seeking confirmation of his intentions.

“I finally got the answer now,” Chance tweeted before retweeting his earlier racism accusation. “I understand. Yall trust Biden more than yall trust Ye. I think I understand why, I just don’t feel the same way.”

Chance, who has donated more than $2 million to Chicago public schools, posted several other tweets about working to fix education funding formulas and eradicating homelessness and calling for accountability for the Chicago Police Department before returning to the issue at hand.

“I also always felt a way about people using the word ‘presidential,’” he tweeted. “Like a n—a acting or not acting presidential. Was Andrew Jackson acting presidential??” He then asked his followers how they feel about prison abolition, universal basic housing and reparations for Black Americans.

Chance appears to be one of the first celebs to endorse West’s run, following on the heels of Katy Perry’s suggestion that “the job is best suited for someone with experience” and Jamie Foxx saying, “Ain’t got time for the bullsh–!!!

How do you as an individual feel about prison abolition and universal basic housing? And if you’re in favor of those things how important are they in terms of immediacy?
