Caroline Jones Recalls ‘Pinch Me’ Career Moment, Covers Norah Jones for Billboard Live At-Home Performance

Caroline Jones switched between “Koa” the guitar and “Slick Willy II” the banjo during her acoustic Billboard Live At-Home performance Thursday (July 16) that raised more than $23,000 for Camp Southern Ground, which she described as her mentor Zac Brown’s “brainchild.”

Located in Peachtree City, Ga., the Zac Brown Band frontman founded Camp Southern Ground as a summer camp for kids with special needs and also serves veterans returning home who need help transitioning into life after military service. Jones, who’s visited, performed and conducted master classes at the camp several times, says the organization holds a special place in her heart.

“A lot of the issues that we’re facing now as a society wouldn’t exist if we all were able to connect to people in different walks of life at a young age and see that we’re all much more the same than we’re different,” the 30-year-old country singer said.

She attributes her music career to him, Jimmy BuffettMac McAnally and Kenny Chesney for always bringing her on the road and into the recording studio with them. Along with Lukas Nelson, the country heavyweights (sans Brown) packed a punch as featured artists under Jones’ “Gulf Coast Girl” song, which McAnally and Buffett wrote for her about their upbringing up and down the Gulf Coast of the United States.

“I’ll never forget Jimmy came over to my house and told me lyric-by-lyric anecdotes from his life and his touring life,” she said while introducing the song. “And every single lyric in the song means something to him and Mac and to, by extension, me, so I’m just honored that they wrote it for me. And they’re featured on the record along with Kenny Chesney and Lukas Nelson, so it’s kind of a ‘pinch me’ moment for me in my career.”

She also honored her good friend and songwriter Jesse Harris by covering a “gorgeous song” he wrote for Norah Jones titled “Don’t Know Why,” which they’ve performed together during one of her shows in New York.
