Beatport Launches a New Genre: See Which Sounds & Artists Are Included

A large and very popular faction of the dance music community is getting the nod of approval Tuesday (Sept. 15) from Beatport, with the online retailer’s launch of its new Dance/Electro Pop genre.

This addition will encompass electronic music that leans into the pop realm and represents, Beatport says in a statement, “the evolution of commercial dance music, which now reaches beyond radio-friendly music and includes electronic music artists who excel in blending their sound with pop elements.”

These artists including include Alison Wonderland, Bob Moses, Disclosure, Channel Tres, Gorgon City, Tokimonsta, Rüfüs Du Sol, Zhu, Lastlings and more. “We enjoy the challenge of integrating structured songwriting into electronic production,” Bob Moses said, “and we’re pleased that Beatport is creating a new home to highlight tracks like this.”

Featured labels include Astralwerks, FFRR, Ministry of Sound, Mom+Pop and Ultra.

Prior to this launch, much of the music that will not live in Dance/Electro Pop had been archived into Electronica. Beatport typically launches new genres two to three times per year, with this debut coming after the June launch of the Organic House genre. With this addition, Beatport is acknowledging that pop’s influence that has become standard in the global dance music community for the better part of the decade.

“As electronic sounds and instrumentation have moved to the foreground of popular music, elements of more traditional pop music have infiltrated electronic music,” the statement continues. “Beatport recognizes that these massive, global hitmakers move seamlessly from the club, to the radio, to the festival stage, and back again with their fusion of organic instruments, pop-vocal sensibilities, and pounding bass lines, capturing fans across the spectrum.
