A Song About Handwashing Won the John Lennon Songwriting Contest

New York-based singer Allegra Levy won this week’s “Stuck At Home” division of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest (JLSC) Monday (Aug. 4) for her original quarantine anthem “Wash My Hands.”

Beginning in March, the late Beatles member’s annual competition sought out talent from submissions sent from all over the world. But in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the JLSC created weekly “Stuck At Home” contests for songwriters, bands, artists and producers as a chance to win high-end home studio equipment and instruments from sponsors Yamaha, Audio-Technica, Focusrite, Genelec, K&M, Mackie, Neutrik, OWC, Reason Studios and Sonicbids.

With this week’s announcement, Levy won with her song that hopes to “encourage kids and everyone to be safe during this pandemic!” according to the YouTube video description. The sing-a-long version of her 2-minute jingle features little children diligently washing their hands, sporting face masks on walks with their parents and bike rides with one another, and maintaining six feet apart from each other.

“I’m gonna wash my hands (Wash my hands)/ I’m gonna wash my hands (Wash my hands)/ I’m gonna wash my hands, wash them well,” Levy sings. “And if I go outside, I’m gonna wear my mask/ And as you are asked, ‘Who are you?’/ I can’t tell/ I’m gonna keep six feet if I’m out in the street/ But I’ll stay off my feet if I feel unwell.”

All “Stuck At Home” entries will automatically be placed in the 2020 JLSC Session II with $300,000 worth of cash prizes that will be awarded on March 1, 2021.

The next deadline for the weekly “Stuck At Home” songwriting competition is Sunday, Aug. 9 at 11:59 p.m. PST.
